This article summarizes the harms that using animals in research causes and outlines recommendations for transforming medical research so that it protects and benefits both humans and other animals.
Having the freedom to move toward resources and away from threats is critical to the health and wellbeing of all life on the planet, and it is foundational to the rights of self-determination for people and animals. As infrastructure development continues in communities across the globe, it is critical that all decisions consider the rights, health, and wellbeing of vulnerable people and animals. Evidence-based animal crossings are one essential solution.
Historically, attempts to advance medical research have depended heavily on violating the rights of vulnerable people and animals. Fortunately, public demand has resulted in a serious reevaluation of how research is conducted. This paper looks at progress in the advancement of ethically-grounded guidelines and practices to address the ethical inconsistencies and inadequacies of research with animals.
Vegan biocyclic and vegan stock-free organic agriculture demonstrate that food that is healthy for humans can be grown in harmony with the earth and with free-living animals, without using inputs from domesticated animals. Read about organizations and individuals engaged in developing, teaching, and promoting growing practices that replenish the soil while respecting the rights and sovereignty of each other, nonhumans, and ecosystems.
Vegan permaculture builds on the systems-based philosophy of permaculture by advancing the rights, health, and wellbeing of people, animals, and the planet. It could form the basis of regional and national policies and practices to eliminate hunger and food insecurity among humans while respecting the rights of other animals and protecting the health of the planet.
The US needs to ratify the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), a comprehensive framework for helping governments ensure that children are protected from exploitation and abuse and that children are provided with what they need to live and thrive. US ratification of the CRC would benefit the nation’s standing in the world and would help the US increase its role as a positive global force for children.
